April 22 - Golf! - or maybe not

Today, I was going to go golfing in the morning.  I was planning on heading out at 6:30 to play with some friends, but I when I got up, this is what it looked like outside.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!  When will it end?

Defeat doesn't finish a man, quit does. A man is not finished when he's defeated. He's finished when he quits.

April 21 - Micah's first Soccer Game of 2011

Micah had her first soccer game tonight.  It is so fun to watch her play.  She plays real hard.  Durning the game she made a soccer move that had the whole team and crowd stunned.  According to Micah it was the "best thing that ever happened to her".  Ask her about it and she will gladly tell you.

The game ended up in a 0 - 0 tie.  It was a good game, but man was it windy.  I don't know if the kids kicked the ball across the field, or if the wind blew it.

As long as no-one scored, it was always going to be close.

April 19 - Wind and more wind

Man - the wind has been blowing up in Idaho for several days.  I am getting tired of it.  It is hard to take a picture of the wind, but trust me, it is blowing hard!

They say the wind blows so much in Idaho because Wyoming sucks (I don't agree with this, but this is what some people say)

If a man does not know what port he is steering for, no wind is favorable to him

April 18 - Flower!

More signs of spring!

April 17 - Green Grass

The grass is getting greener.  You know what this means ...... spring and golf!

Anyone who watches golf on television would enjoy watching the grass grow on the greens.

April 16 - Possible Eagle Project?

Today Wendy and Tyler took some pictures of a possible Eagle project.  This is the HELP, INC. building at it needs some yard work and some rooms painted.  HELP is an agency that offers a multitude of services to help prevent child abuse and also works with English as a second language families.

April 15 - Some yard work?

Man, it must be getting spring.  We actually got a little bit of yard work done today.  Tyler helped put some fertilizer on the yard.  Lets hope the weather keeps going in the "warmer" direction.

April 14 - Wendy's trip to the airport

Today Wendy took some of the families she knows from work to an airport hanger to look at some planes. She took lots of photos and it look like everyone had a good time.

April 13 - Band at Barnes & Noble

Today Wendy and Tyler went to Barnes & Noble for a little band concert.  Some members of Tyler's school band put on a small concert for those reading books.  I am not sure how it when - books and saxophones.  Not the best of reading music!

Tyler - thanks for sharing your talent
Wendy - thanks for taking these pictures

Don't play the saxophone. Let it play you.

April 12 - Soccer Practice

Today Wendy took the camera to Micah's soccer practice.  As you can tell from the pictures below it looks like Micah is having fun with practice (and Wendy is having fun with the camera).  The last picture shows Micah with her friend Shelby.

A champion is someone who does not settle for that day's practice, that day's competition, that day's performance. They are always striving to be better. They don't live in the past.

April 11 - Some signs of Spring?

I am not holding my breath, but maybe Spring is on its way (see the green grass).

(Don't worry I am sure it will snow again soon)

April 10 - Rain - at least it is not Snow????

We have been getting some rain on and off for the past few days.  At least it is not snow.

April 9 - ACT Test and Trip to DI

Today we took a lot of stuff to the DI.  We filled up our van with sacks of items we cleaned out from the basement.  We also took a load of trash to the dump (I will spare you any pictures of the dump).  As you can see we had a lot of items.  The last picture is our stuff in the drop off bin (or jus some of the stuff).

Mariah also took the ACT test today.  She is hoping to get a 30 or higher (as she got a 29 last time).  The nice thing is that if she scores lower then a 29, then she does not have to count it.  The only thing she  is out is the cost of the test and the many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many hours of studying.

The live of a man consists not is seeing visions and in dreaming dreams, but in active charity and in willing service.

April 8 - Rexburg Temple

Today Wendy and I took Mariah and Tyler to the Rexburg temple to do some work.  We dropped Micah off at Grandma and Grandpa Bates home.  It took about 1 1/2 hours for each of the kids to do 5 names.  There is a lot of college kids that go and do work in the temple.

It was a great experience.

This picture is not one that I took.

April 7 - MORE SNOW - WHEN WILL IT END???????

You have got to be kidding me, when will it end???????  I have no more words to say about snow.  This is not a repost of an old post - these pictures are from April 7 and the morning of April 8th.

Bruce Wayne: People are dying, Alfred. What would you have me do?
Alfred Pennyworth: Endure, Master Wayne. Take it. They'll hate you for it, but that's the point of Batman, he can be the outcast. He can make the choice that no one else can make, the right choice.
Bruce Wayne: Well today I found out what Batman can't do. He can't endure this. Today you get to say "I told you so."
Alfred Pennyworth: Today, I don't want to.

April 6 - Cleaning Day

Wendy and I didn't take our kids anywhere for Spring Break, we made them work.  And today, they worked really hard!

They spend all day cleaning out our storage room.  It has been a couple of years since it was cleaned out, and it was due.  I was lucky, I got to spend the day at work so I missed most of the fun stuff.  There was still some work to do when I got home, but not as much as you see below.

I guess the thing that shocked me most, we the attitude of the kids.  They had great attitudes all day.  I think that when I got home, I was the one who got in the way and slowed down the work.

Mariah took these pictures and as you can see, they did a lot of work (and we did end up freeing Bogey by the end of the day).

I do not know anyone who has gotten to the top without hard work. That is the recipe. It will not always get you to the top, but it will get you pretty near.

April 5 - NCAA Final Results - Welch Family Challenge

Well, this is a hard post to do.  It is hard to admit this ......

Tyler won the family NCAA Bracket Challenge.  The points are based upon the ESPN scoring method.

Tyler - 780 pts
Wendy - 570 pts
Mariah - 550 pts
Dad - 550 pts
Micah - 510 pts

Tyler had Uconn in the final game losing to BYU.  He was the only one in our family to have at least one of the final four teams.  It was a hard year.  I am not sure which is worse - losing to Tyler or losing to the Dog.  It has been a hard couple of years for Dad.

To celebrate his victory, Tyler took the family to Famous Daves for lunch today.  He got to pick the place to eat (winner picks the place to eat).  It was fun, and all I can say is ....... wait until next year!

Win as if you were used to it, lose as if you enjoyed it for a change

April 4 - New Sleeping Arrangements

Today when I got home I was told that Mariah and Micah would be switching beds around.  This is not a task that I thought I would have to worry about when I got home.  I was hoping to spend the evening watching the NCAA final tournament game.

However, when Micah gets something in her head, she has to do it right now (she gets this from me and it is not a good trait to have).  I told her we would would work on this some other night, but that is not what she wanted, so she cleaned out her room.  Mariah and her started taking the beds apart.  Normally this is not a big deal, but the bed that had to be moved was one my dad build.  It is a solid piece of wood that needs to have about 20 Allen wrench bolts taken out of it.  We got the bed apart and moved to the new room, but it still had to be put together.

Needless to say, the game was about ready to start, so Wendy said that I could go watch it and she would help finish the move.  I have a great wife and she has a poor husband.

April 3 - On the Road to Sugar City

Today we went up to Sugar City for lunch and to watch conference.  We left right after Pres. Uchtdoft gave his Sunday morning address about the event that happened on the Road to Damascus.  I thought that taking a picture of our journey to Sugar City would help me remember his talk and the lesson it taught.

One of the most remarkable events in the history of the world happened on the road to Damascus.

April 2 - Mariah Watching Conference - Ft. Collins Temple!

This is how Mariah watched conference on Saturday.  We had to poke her every once in a while to make sure she was alive.  She moved or said something each time we poked her, so we assume that she was awake the whole time.

I am giving her a little bit of a hard time, as she was only like this for a talk or two.  Our kids did a good job listening to conference (much better then I did when I was young - sorry mom and dad).

One thing that happened today that I got excited about was when Pres. Monson today announced that there would be a temple in Ft. Collins Colorado.  This is GREAT!  Another temple in the great state of Colorado.  Wonder if this is the district that my parents will be in?

Each year, millions of skiers come to Colorado to experience its superb emergency medical facilities

April 1 - THANKS WENDY

I have been told that I don't talk enough about what Wendy is doing.  I am sorry for this!  Wendy is a very hard worker.  She works hard at home and at her employment.  She is a wonderful wife and mother.  I will try and post more things about what is going on in Wendy's life.

One of her favorite things in life is an empty laundry basket.

Behind every working woman is an enormous pile of unwashed laundry.

March 31 - Birthday and Parent Teacher Conferences

I would like to thank everyone for wishing me a happy birthday.  I had a good day.

I went to work in the morning (and I am grateful I have a job), then spent the evening at Micah's parent/teacher conference.  It is fun going to Parent/Teacher Conferences.  Yesterday, Wendy and I went to Mariah and Tyler's school for their conferences.  When you have three kids in three different schools, it makes for a long evening.

All three of my children are great students.  They each have their strong points.  Mariah is a wonderful student who is an excellent writer.  Just about every teacher commented on her writing.  Tyler is very helpful in all of his classes.  Just about every teacher commented on him being a gentleman.  Micah is a great reader, who is very helpful in her class.  I am grateful for all of my children.

March 30 - New Golf Clubs

Today I picked up my new birthday present.  My parents bought me a new set of Golf Clubs.  They are Ping K15s, which are a very nice club.

They pulled a fast one.  I was expecting to pick up "Cobra" clubs, but they switched my order and got me Pings.  I had to double check the order.

Thanks Mom and Dad!

Silent gratitude isn't much use to anyone.

March 29 - PS3 Update

We where said to see our old PS3 give up the ghost, but it was beyond repair.  So we ended up getting a new one.  As I said in my older post, I did have some Reward Zone points saved up, which was nice to have.

Our family uses the PS3 for Netflix, PS3 games, DVD and Blue Ray player, so it does get a lot of use.

March 28 - More Snow - ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

This post is not a repeat.  It is snowing again ------- when will it end?

I don't know what else to say ..........  I know this may not look like a lot, but it was snowing hard at work (it even drifted and they had to clear the walks).

When will it end????????

March 27 - Sunday, Home teaching

Today Tyler and I finished up our home teaching for the month.  We have four families to visit.  We had already done two of them, so today we had to visit two more.  Both of these families are living in an assisted home for those that are elderly or handicap.

We had a good visit with both of them today.

Note:  This picture was taken of the web - the grass is NOT green and the sky is NOT blue in Idaho.

Brethren, home teaching is not just another program. It is the priesthood way of watching over the Saints and accomplishing the mission of the Church. Home teaching is not just an assignment. It is a sacred calling.
